Also, Frenchy might be the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I'm definitely in love with her. HG - Thanks for playing that for us last night. I always love gaining a little more appreciation for your truly bizarre and awesome interests.

Has anyone else seen Life of Pi? I enjoyed the movie, but doubt I would have had I not already read the book. And it also fell a bit short of the book in my estimation.
Thoughts?

Yeah I saw it. I thought it was campy. I read the book but didn't love it. The movie was remarkably forgettable.

I thought the book was quite interesting. It presents 2 possible explanations for what might have happened, one of which is implausible and the other of which leaves out a huge time gap. As a reader, your choice is:
a) believe the fantastical version of the story b) believe the realistic version of the story and fill in the time gaps somehow c) decide there's yet a third, untold story.
My thought is that if you accept option c) and think about the sort of stress that 200+ days at sea would induce on a person, that the other two make a lot more sense. The reason the fantastical version of the story exists is because the narrator cannot cope with reality. Even the realistic version is probably distorted in various ways.
The other odd thing about the book / movie is the claims that it will 'make you believe in God'. It won't. But consider that claim in context, and it might lead you somewhere else on the spiritual plane not involving any of the various Gods that Pi is acquainted with.

I read the book and saw the movie. I preferred the book by far. The movie was beautiful, as all Ang Lee productions are but I didn't like the actors much. The kid actor was okay but the grown up version and the Canadian reporter were awkward and cheesy. I also don't remember God being as huge of a focus in the book as it was in the movie.

Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed Forbidden Zone, Pea. It's my favorite thing in the world. And yes, I agree, Marie-Pascale 'Frenchy' Elfman is the zenith of feminine sexuality in my book. That little dance she does in the schoolhouse... gooooooodnight.

Life of Pi was fucking incredible. Some of the scenes on the boat were absolutely breathtaking. I was totally blown away.

Over the weekend, we watched Men in Black 3, Prometheus, ParaNorman and then Heavenly Creatures, because Stormy had never seen it.
All three of the more recent films were substantially better than I had anticipated. Men in Black 3 made up for Men in Black 2 in spades; it was damn near as fun and exciting as watching the original back in 1997. Paranorman was consistently beautiful but a little by-the-numbers for the first two acts, but the last thirty minutes or so were seriously a kick to the brain.
As for Prometheus -- fucking EVERYONE talked shit about this film and I don't get it. I thought it looked incredible, I thought the pacing was perfect, I was repeatedly surprised by it and I really, really loved it.
Sir Ridley invented the DON'T TRUST THE ANDROID trope, and it has since been run into the ground. How many times am I supposed to be caught off guard by the fucking robot wanting to be more-than-human and deciding to fuck shit up? Whatever, I still loved it.
I hated Prometheus. Started off pretty good, but it just took a wicked turn into stupid town once those ridiculous looking aliens showed up. And then the old man? Lawdy. It was awful.

I've now seen Prometheus several times and each time watch it I find more and more holes. However, despite all the plot holes, I still thoroughly enjoy it. It's visually stunning and poses several interesting theological questions. Makes for fun conversations.
But yes, Guy Pearce as the old dude was pretty silly.

Prometheus had a lot of great scenes, but strung together, they didn't make a whole lot of sense. Sad, really - I really enjoyed it before I thought about the plot for more than 5 seconds.

It was so fucking good. Best theater experience I've had in a long time.
