What a complete piece of hipster bullshit that was. I got the feeling it's supposed to be this generations version of Kids, except the problem is hipsters are boring, self-entitled douches that just spend their time riding bikes, spitting PBR on each other, saying things like slave vaginer and cum chugging and talk about hobo dicks and Hitler's good ideas as if it's supposed to be funny and/or shocking but unfortunately is neither, and sometimes they also play stickball with James Murphy. That was probably what duped me into seeing it, James Murphy listed in the cast. Anyway, the kids we followed in Kids had way more value as human beings than these twenty something hipster twats do. I just wish I didn't waste 45 minutes trying to decide if my gut instinct from the first scene was right. |
|
I'm never going to see this movie because I'm sure it's awful and I can't stand Tim & Eric but I'm pretty sure it's trying to attack the emptiness of hipsters rather than glorify them. Doesn't really change anything about how horrible it was but don't blame this one on hipsters.
Finally saw The Master last night and I predictably have no idea what the fuck it was. Everything non-plot related was incredible but it's going to take a very long time to unpack what the movie was really trying to accomplish. I'd definitely recommend it to people for the acting and directing alone but uh...prepare to be unsure of what you saw.

HG and Company: Thank you all for the reccommendations. I've seen em all but the following: Black Sheep, The Tripper (sounds perfect), Bad Taste, Slither, Near Dark (you had me at Bill Paxton), The Company of Wolves, The Last Exorcism and Fido. So far the first two films of Nightmares on 96th Street were kind of duds- until we watched Behind the Mask that is. The first was Guy Maddin's Keyhole and it was a fucking dissapointment. Guy Maddin impressed the shit out of me with Brand Upon the Brain but we just couldn't get through Keyhole, like how do you fuck up a movie with Isabella Rossellini in it? Maybe it got better later, I still have no idea what is was about really... ghosts trapped in a house I guess? The other one we watched was an Australian film called The Loved Ones. I guess it wasn't awful and I have to say that I screamed more during that movie than I can remember in a long time... but it can basically be boiled down to shock-torture porn, effective but brutal.
I watched May as a teenager when I had a raging boner for Jeremy Sisto. The fucking scene with the glass!!!!
Nobody else understands why I like Jeepers Creepers so much. I was a little let down once the creeper is totally revealed (always the case! Read: The Langoliers) but damn if that truck wasnt the scariest truck ever.

I watched the Langoliers when it originally aired on TV and we thought it would be a fun thing when we were doing Stephen King miniseries watching, but when we watched it again I totally had THE WOSRT nightmares. Actually, that is why I didn't see a lot of scary movies growing up. They gave me the night jibblies.

Nadine- have you ever seen Repulsion starring Catherine Deneuve? Pretty sure Roman Polanski directed it. One of my favorite psychological thrillers.

KY- oooh, never seen it. I've enjoyed most Polanski movies I've seen (particularly Rosemary's Baby, The Pianist and The Tenant) although all the sex crime controversy is pretty sketchy. I'll check it out fo sho tho.

I LOVE THE LANGOLIERS
Most disappointing monster reveal of all time, but I still love that miniseries. I made Audrey watch it and she was rolling on the floor laughing when the Langoliers were revealed. I also love the miniseries version of the Shining.

RE: The Master. Roger Ebert's review sums up my experience - it's incredible, visceral, a masterpiece of visual art, and I have no idea what the text was trying to say or accomplish. That's loaded because it makes a big assumption about the nature of art (that it has an object in mind), but still my reaction.

yeah I saw Ebert's review and definitely agree with it at the moment. I expected to feel this way though and I don't want to reject the broader meaning of the movie before I see it again. There are things I can begin to grasp right now and I imagine they'll become clearer the second time through.
Then again, Ebert may be dead on and there might not be anything there. I have a hard time believing it based on PTA's track record but who knows.

HG, Stormy- whadya guys think of The Master? It looked freakin beautiful in 70mm and I was engaged the whole time, albiet a little disoriented at the end. Joaquin will get his third nomination and first win for this performance and PSH will be nominated for a supporting role, sin dudo. All of the actors really gave powerhouse performances.
