You guys have got me in such an outer-space sci/fi mood now. Aliens is happening tonight. Or maybe Sunshine. Despite the awful final third of that movie, it's still one of my favorites of the genre.

Come to think of it, it seems like about half of all of the space movies ever made have terrible endings. Event Horizon immediately comes to mind.

I liked Sunshine. It fell apart but it was good.

Right?? Fucking space man. That shit is so cool. I used to have dozens of books about the planets and stars when I was a kid.

It's so fascinating. The numbers are just overwhelming. For instance, there are about a hundred billion stars in our galaxy, and we're a medium sized galaxy. There are about a hundred billion estimated galaxies in the universe. That's 100,000,000,000 x 100,000,000,000 stars in the universe.
Our star has 8 planets. One is habitable.
If one in a million stars is the same size as the sun, and one in a million of those stars has planets, and one in a million of those planets is in the Goldilocks zone, and one in a million of those Goldilocks-zone planets is Earth's size, and one in a million of those Earth-size planets has life, and one in a million of those planets with life has intelligent life,
then there are still billions of planets in the universe with intelligent life.

Ladies and gentlemen, strap your headphones on, turn the lights off and prepare to allow Mr. Morgan Freeman to take your breath away on this Cosmic Journey.

So, I'm assuming y'all have seen Hubble? I saw it in IMAX 3-D and it was fucking unbelievable.

Also, did you know that the sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace. Where hydrogen is built into helium At a temperature of millions of degrees. Yo ho, it's hot, the sun is not a place where we could live. But here on earth there'd be no life Without the light it gives.
We need its light, we need its heat, we need its energy. Without the sun, without a doubt there'd be no you and me.
The sun is hot. It is so hot that everything on it is a gas: iron, copper, aluminum, and many others. The sun is large. If the sun were hollow, a million earths could fit inside. And yet, the sun is only a middle-sized star. The sun is far away, about 93 million miles away, and that's why it looks so small. And even when it's out of sight the sun shines night and day.
The sun gives heat, the sun gives light, the sunlight that we see. The sunlight comes from our own sun's atomic energy.
Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. The heat and light of the sun come from the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and helium.

The creation of the Big Bang is one of the most fascinating things I have ever heard of in my entire life. It moved me, man.
I won't go into too great of detail (basically no detail) but I love how it all started by making a bunch of stuff that didn't want anything to do with each other. Almost nothing happened for billions of years once the universe cooled down until this stuff it hit a certain concentration. Then a star was formed and then that star went to super nova and released all these elements that began to react with one another along with all this other dust that had been completely useless and dormant until this very moment. Like a waiting lover. Boom. Everything follows suit from there and sort of repeats itself in micro scale in terms of creating planetary atmospheres and ecosystems.
It's so patient and romantic in a way.
EDIT: You know, the creation of Jazz also had similar birthing as well. That always struck me with awe too.

My physics teacher was huge into every astronomy related, and I would come home with the most mind-boggling facts and theories, but alas, nowadays when I try to recall them I end up sounding like that guy who always forgets the punchline to his jokes.

Isn't that the worst! So many mind blowing educational facts that have impacted my way of looking at things are now forgotten punchlines as well.

Seriously. I used to have the greatest explanation of time dilation using a clock and a space ship and a beam of light, but that's about all I can remember. FUCK.

Have you ever heard the theory that our universe is just one of an endless amount of collapsing and reforming universes? I think it was a subject in one of Morgan Freeman's The Universe series.
