BTdubs (I don't know what this means, but I like it and it sounds so much better than all those calculated manuscript words), I don't want to stretch spandex anymore either, but Cat you are CLEARLY out of the loop about how "being degraded works".
You see, making baseless claims and generalizations about why other people, you are not either a part of or one of, should stop getting offended about your lovely little jokes is okay. Sure it's tricky (I will give it that), but since one should have zero empathy for the systematic plight of others, it is only natural to make up these child like defenses in order to carry on with our funnin' on said peoples problems. Why can't we just have our fun and not be held accountable for greasin' the wheels of sexism and objectification. Geeze, total buzz kills.
When people start aiming in on you, that's when it actually turns into "being degrading". Again, tricky stuff here Cat, but you'll get the hang of it. Basically make any ingnorant comment you like and then get defensive about it with a grade six explanation, then accuse the offended party of probably not knowing the right feelings they are feeling even though they actually are one of the minorities you are offending (which of course you are not one of at all), and tell them they are just too sensitive. Follow this and you'll be able to make your guilt free ignorance nothing short of a proud badge on your shoulder for all to see and "deal with"!

For your academic approval: A fucking +!
Thanks for that contribution Switch. That sounds like a pretty interesting documentary. I'm glad to see there are guys who are actually willing to realize that though its become commonplace and we gloss over particular social inequalities in this society, its still important to be more aware and maybe make little steps to rectify those inequalities. No, things aren't ever going to majorly change, but being a female in a patriarchal society certainly has its incredibly unfair suppressors.
end scene.

My problem with declaring porn as degrading for women is that it is a blanket statement that doesn't apply to nearly all cases, and individual cases in which women are forced into pornography under duress are dealing with actual objectification.
I'll take the case of pornography produced by consenting individuals as a starting point, I know these people exist because I'm very close friends with a couple who makes and distributes their own porn together (with only them in it, and they are engaged).
In the case of two such individuals, the concern that some people have is that the objectification of women displayed in a pornographic film is presumably that men will not be able to discriminate the difference between the world on the screen and the real world, and thus the objectification will bleed over. I am fully sympathetic to this viewpoint, and I do in fact know guys who are total porn hounds who also (at least explicitly) treat women like they aren't real people.
In these cases however women aren't being objectified, because if you take consensual activity between partners who love each other and take it under the envelope of objectification, the problem with objectification loses all of its meaning.
The problematic form of objectification is when people have their value taken away from them and are seen as less than people in a manner that they cannot control. I am fully against that form of objectification, and concede that there are many girls who get into porn because they have no other choice (effectively) and also that many people who are regular consumers of porn fail to draw the line between reality and consensual behavior. I am just entirely unsympathetic to blanket statements which lack any qualification.

If he weren't here to put us idiots in our places this forum would be out of control and overrun by foolish, useless conversation.
It's God's work, really.

This is now an argument thread, what can it move on to?
I for one vote for the classic argument of zombies vs panthers.
Discuss.
(though, for the record I did find the porn debate interesting)

You've been here a week. I've got plenty to say, just not in response to your wearisome belligerence. I have single posts with more insight than you have managed since you hot here. If you spent any time reading the board instead of flapping your teeth all day you would know that.
