I'm sure we don't have traction for a whole 10-team league from board members, but my buddy just started a public league and is looking for more players.

It's on ESPN.com, the league is called "NBA MAFIA" and the draft is tomorrow night at 9 pm EST, 6 pacific. It's a 10-member roto-league, snake draft, no restriction, public and of course free. We have 4 of 10 spots filled. Join us if you're interested!

I tried NBA fantasy once, and hated hated hated it. It was more about following the schedule, "replace the guy who has two games this week with the guy who plays five games this week."

I was trying to get a 4 team league started with my basketball friends, knowing it would be ridiculously shitty, but potentially fun, but only one other guy was interested. Therefore we both just signed up. We'll suck, but I'm sure you want to finally beat me in something.

EDIT: We were actually going to make fun of the team who won, and say, "You douche, you like the NBA." He'll (Team Beaird) be a lot better than me, because he is an actual NBA fan. I only follow the sport because of my home town team. My boredom at work and competitive spirit might make me pay attention though.

You were probably in a head-to-head league before, which is mostly about counting minutes, and isn't as heady as baseball - this is a roto league, so it should actually be up your alley. I have a feeling you'll still kick my ass, but damnit if I don't at least have a chance.

You're right, I read the rules, and this is right up my alley. I didn't realize roto was possible in other sports because there aren't enough categories that matter, but I'm liking this system.

I even had a strategy going into the draft! Since it's just you and I reading this (the under 6'5 not allowed thread), I'll give away my secret just to see if it actually works.

Percentage categories are tough to come back from as the season wears on and people stop playing. You can easily gain in a cumulative category (assists, blocks, points) when other owners stop playing, and stick themselves with a couple injured guys in their lineup. If those same injured guys are the worst shooters on their team, they'll actually be better than you in the percentage categories.

So my strategy was to draft guys who get to the line with a high FT%, and pick more big men than small guys. Therefore I should be able to keep my FG% high (since big men get easier buckets), win the FT% category, and not get my ass kicked in scoring and rebounds.

This strategy should give me the opportunity to at least not finish last, and give me a pretty solid base while I learn fantasy basketball. Then if I decide after a month or two that I like fantasy basketball, and want to put some effort into it (I'll probably be really far behind in assists, steals, and 3 pointers made), I'll get the injured Rubio back to help in those categories, and start paying more attention to the waiver wire.

I spent about an hour researching fantasy NBA, while I was drunk after returning from watching the NFL all day, so this strategy was implemented on the fly. I'm tied for last place currently!

That actually is a solid strategy, Know. I tried something different this year in two of my leagues - I drafted for steals, assists, and blocks, which are the three hardest stats to come by. So far it's...totally not panning out. Looking really ugly actually. But I also only drafted half of my team. Like baseball, however, it's a long season.

Thanks for sucking at fantasy basketball more than I. I'm almost in last place. Maybe you should try fantasy soccer, or fantasy darts.

Drew, is Team Chode-inez one of your friends, or someone who joined after the league went public?

That's my friend Jason. He's the most obnoxious person to play fantasy sports with.

Agreed. I've always wondered if there was a correlation between people's fantasy sports personality, and their real personality. I've spent at least 15 minutes thinking about this today.

I think I have at least two of the four qualities listed below nailed:

1. He's an insurance salesman.
2. He's really young and stupid.
3. He's an only child.
4. He's a trust fund kid.

I won't require you to bad mouth your friend on-line, so feel free to PM me, or ignore me, but I have a feeling you've known him a long time, and he owns less than 15% of your other friend's phone numbers.

All I will say is that you're correct about 2 and 3

Since I'm terrible with names, and I don't watch a lot of basketball (so I don't know who a lot of these players are), I click on the names of the available guys and the added/dropped players, and usually remember who they are based on their pictures.

I noticed today Markief Morris was added while Marcus Morris was dropped. After looking at each of the players stats and pictures, I thought, "those guys look identical. Am I racist for thinking this?" I googled it, turns out they are twins.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the many reasons I now refer to your friend CHODE-inez is because he criticized me for the trade I made the first week of the season, and later said his offers are way better. I traded Al Jefferson away for Serge Ibaka. I was giving up the 15th pick for the 23rd pick, so I was giving up the better player on paper. My reasoning was that I hate the Jazz, and they have three developing big guys who might cut into each others production, so I didn't like Jefferson. I had a huge boner for Ibaka because he could single handily win the blocks category, and he's a great shooter. I knew the Thunder traded away one of their best scorers, so there would be more shots heading his way. If he could just develop into a better rebounder, he might be an enormous fantasy stud.

Of course I've been tracking the stats of each guy since CHODE-inez called me an idiot for making the trade, and they are similar. I noticed in the ESPN fantasy basketball front page story, they have the players ranked by value from this point forward in the season. The guy I traded for (Ibaka) is ranked 8. The guy I traded (Jefferson) is ranked 15. It's clear Ibaka's value went through the roof recently, just like I expected. CHODE-inez even offered me a trade for Ibaka today, albeit for his worst two players (again).

He explained his strategy to me once - he just wants to be as annoying as possible so that someone will make a trade with him just hoping to get him off their backs. I think that his strategy just worked, too, because he got Russell Westbrook off of the UM guy for Tony Parker and Zach Randolph. In fantasy basketball, just like in the NBA, you're only as good as your superstars. And Ibaka is definitely a fantasy stud, I thought about drafting him in the first round and probably should have.
