Precisely Dr. Garbanzogy, precisely.
Fifth Street Bar & Grill Shax. They were awesome, good value and awesome food, but now... They even took out all the bar stools with the regular's names on placards out!

Why even bother keeping the name if they're going to alienate everyone that helped keep the place running in the first place?

I have no idea. I think they were trying to make changes so gradually that people didn't notice, but it's still strange. Definitely trying to cater to a different, more Cactus-Club kind of customer though.

Ugh I'm so sick of those cookie cutter type restaurants. Earls, Joeys, Cactus Club, Moxies et al can go fuck a hat.

Sounds like this "Cheers" franchise that has been popping up all over my area recently. Anytime a struggling bar goes under, these guys swoop in and re-brand it, leaving a UFC-ready douche bar with all of the bright blue Pornstar and Sex on the Beach drinks you could ever want.

Meh, I'm kind of sick of those "cookie cutter" types of restaurants as much as I'm sick of all these other restaurants claiming to be hip and cool and indie and growing their own veggies and being local and seasonal because that is what is the cool thing to say... generally just being overall douche bags about food, and then charging $16 for an appetizer.
Personally I'd rather just make the food myself, and spend my restaurant money on booze.
That's just my two cents.

That was why was great about his bar. All their shit was house-made, never frozen and relatively locally sourced but it was still fairly priced. We would go watch a hockey game and eat and drink many beers for 3 hours and never spent more than $60. We went last night, each had 2 drinks, 1 appy and a pizza and it was $50.

Just so we're on the same page, what exactly is a cookie cutter restaurant in this context? (I have no idea what any of the examples you mentioned are.)

The last Moxie's I went to looked just like the picture of Cactus Club. All are definitely interchangeable.
But I do really like the Joey's on Burrard between Robson and Smithe, and only that Joey's. It has more to do with the service and that on the restaurant side the music isn't at club-levels so I can actually have a conversation. Also, lobster grilled cheese sandwich on garlic toast. Mmmmm.
