The real issue is mental health in my opinion. Gun control is also a huge issue, but damn people... seek some fucking help.

The problem with mental health is that a lot of people can't tell that they require help. Their thinking seems completely rational to themselves.

Looks like the shooter's mom was also found dead. The circumstances surrounding her death have not been made public, but she may have worked at the school.

Concur. No sane person commits an act this horrendous.

Once again this will spark the debate about gun control but you're never going to get rid of all guns and if you can't get rid of them all people who want them will continue to get their hands on them.

The problem is also that people who would seek help may have no insurance, and no money to pay for it, just like any other health issue.

To anyone who tells you "if the teachers had guns, this wouldn't have gotten so out of control," we have a higher percentage of our populace "armed" than any country in the world, and it controls nothing except the occasional break-in or mugging. Most guns should be illegal to own, sell or possess. MOST guns, like every other civilized country in the world.

But it's going to remain politically toxic to raise this issue, so nothing will happen. Guaranteed.

If these people really want to hurt others, they will find a way to do it. They could jump into a truck or bus and do just as much damage. Do you think if there are no guns available they'll just give up because any other method of hurting people is too much work? No, their minds are gone, and they are most likely determined.

You can't kill 18 children and 27 people in an elementary school with a truck or bus.

Not interested in debating on here though, sorry for bringing it up.

The whole thing is fucked up, but it kind of bugs me that people want to focus so intently on the method these crimes were committed, instead of the fact that they were.

Well, it'd be pretty hard to massacre a bunch of little kids with a knife without at least 30 staff members tackling you and beating you up. The method is important because there is no similar alternative.

So much deep respect to the victims and families in the recent shootings. Very little angers me more than hurting or killing innocent people, especially children. While all of these circumstances and tragedies are extremely complex and unique, I hope people begin realizing the importance of Mental Health in society (lack there of in our case)... Gun control is necessary, violence in video games, better assistance to parents with troubled children, better protection near schools: all of that is important, but i don't think any of it is nearly as important as developing ways that normal humans can spend intentional & self-critical time and work on their mental health. Just like going to the gym and exercising, the mind and emotional body is so fragile and complex. They can pass laws and argue on the news, but with so many troubled individuals attacking innocent people and then killing themselves it is SHOUTING IN LOUD CAPITAL LETTERS: We need to spend more time, attention, and money on positive, encouraging social mental health, and less on prisons. Less time arguing against gun control, less time on distracting issues like adultery or the sex life of celebrities and more right here at home where we have semi-regular acts of horrific violence on innocent people.

People are just shocked, saddened, sickened, etc. and want to be able to stop this from happening.

I can’t help but cry and extend a mental hug to the families affected by the Newtown shooting. Days after the mass shooting in Oregon, I have to wonder when enough will be enough. We have the right to bear arms, but when that right is being abused time and time again with guns made specifically to kill people, is it time to take that right away? There was nothing threatening about school children learning and probably, bouncing with excitement on the seventh day of Hanukkah and a less than two weeks from Christmas. I think about the parents who will never be able to give their children carefully wrapped presents from Santa this year. These people are the same ones that have to visually identify the bodies of their 5 year olds. With this being the 7th well documented mass shooting in America in 2012 ALONE, I don’t know what it is going to take for Second Amendment supporters to begin wondering about what their staunch impeding of motions to outlaw or make it more difficult for someone to get a handgun is doing.
