 PORTLAND - what to do?
« Thread Started on May 21, 2011, 11:44am »

So I'll be in Portland on Tuesday and Wednesday night before the fest, and being an east coaster, I don't make it this way ever. In two days, what is essential to do in Portland? There doesn't seem to be any good shows going on in the time I'm there, but I guess there's more than enough microbrews and various places to eat to hit. Aside from Voodoo Donuts though, I don't know a ton about the city. I've also heard that there are various beautiful trails and parks around the city, although again, I don't know where to begin. Are most of these reachable by public transit? Will I get feasted on by bears? Come on, fill me in here, Portlanders.

Yes, most likely. The bears here are very violent.

Hang out with me?? ;)
Public transit aka the Max will take you anywhere you wanna go :) it's glorious

things you NEED to do:
1) Voodoo Donuts
2) If ur into arcades (and who isnt) hit up wonderland aka The avalon Theatre, or go to Ground Kontrol the Barcade
3) There is TONS of gorgeous trails at Washington Park highly highly recommended.
4) There is a huge amount of rad breweries around here, most famous and IMO the best is any McMenamins (Kennedy school is really fun)

If you are going to go to an arcade do Ground Kontrol.

And we have great public transit. Where in the city are you staying?

Ugh, Voodoo Donuts. Why is that the ONE thing this city is known for? I prefer my donuts WITHOUT stale cereal and cold bacon on them, thanks.

Point proven.

What are residents views on the B-Side Tavern?

Also, Podnah's Pit Barbecue? The lamb ribs I had there were amazing.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll be staying at the Hawthorne Hostel, which from what I understand is about 15 minutes from downtown Portland. I've been crazy busy lately and haven't done nearly enough research on the area, but I'll take what you guys are saying into account. Washington Park, specifically, sounds great. Super excited to see the city.

The Hawthorne Hostel is right in one of the best parts of town. The smaller, more manageable Powell's Books is right up the street (the HUGE Powell's is downtown), there are a couple record stores right up Hawthorne (I recommend Jackpot!), and lots of good food/coffee/beer.

Elsewhere I recommended Oak's Bottom, a wildlife/wetland preserve; it's got many, many beautiful trails that run from SE all the way into downtown. Lots of beautiful birds and thousands of frogs/beavers/owls and shit down there.
