 Swimming Holes?
« Thread Started on May 22, 2012, 11:19am »

Does anybody knwo of any good swimming holes near the venue? Given the talk about the long wait for dirty showers, taking a morning trip to a river/lake seems like a good option. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It's not going to be easy to get your car out of the campground, but if you really want to try...

Head out of the venue back toward Vantage. Take a left at the crossroad on the other side of the Vantage bridge and drive about 4 miles. You'll come to an old campground called Getty's Cove. Right next to it is a small bridge that you can park next to and either jump off it into the water or climb down the rocks. It's a bit of a drive to get there, but it's a really fantastic and refreshing place to swim.

If you do get your car out, head down Silica Road about 4 miles to the road before the BIG S turn to the freeway on-ramp, its called "Old Vantage Road".
Take that road down a mile if you like to rock climb, the area is called Feathers, and about 3 if you want one of the most beautiful settings along the Columbia River to wash up for the night.
Even a CO beach if interested. Park in the lot and walk up the trail about 4 football fields. Very pretty area for sure
Your welcome..

A couple years ago the water heater in my friend's trailer wasn't working right, so some of them bathed in the Columbia. We went to the park that's off to the right as you're approaching Vantage from the bridge. There's usually people swimming or launching boats from there if it's a nice day. I like the ideas in the previous posts, we've never done a lot of exploring since my friends tend to sleep in late and then go straight to the amphitheater.

Thanks for all the help! I am just looking at Google Maps to try and Dr. Garbanzoure out exactly where this is. Is the left you make after going over Vantage Bridge called Huntzinger Road? And are Getty's Cove and the small bridge inside Wanapum State Park, or even further south?

Yep Huntzinger road is correct. Go to Google maps and follow it until you see this. When you drive it, it will be impossible to miss. It's the only bridge on that road, and you'll see a campground to the right of it.

Directly across from the river from the Gorge is a cove called "sand bar", which the boats line up like Lake Havasu in Arizona 4 deep to the shore. All the woman wearing titty tassles and everything.
Crazy fun

Oh, also, if you use Google maps right now, they recorded this area last year over the Memorial day weekend, so if you zoom in, you will see the Gorge camping lot PACKED with peeps and the cars and such.
But then, while there, move over across the river and see the boat madness Im speaking of
Holiday is huge here

Well, yesterday, I walked from the water up to the gorge/camping cirle of land, but it is fenced. If you can get out around the property either the backside or the Cave B winery side, the water is accessible within a nice 3 mile hike down. Just an FYI
If you look on google maps, its even labeled The Gorge Amphitheater Trail
