All religion is a joke.
But I guess it's more of a, "Hate the game, not the playa", sort of deal. Unless the playa is a huge asshole who uses "faith" to defend hateful actions.
EDIT: Alright, even that is harsh. Listen, I don't appreciate Religion, to me it serves nothing more than to explain and comfort our collective fears of the unknown in both this universe and people different from us. It galvonizes an Us vs. Them mentality. I appreciate it is a complicated mess and I even have sympathy for those that do use religion to defend intolerance, we're dealin' with a beast that is ingrained since birth and rewarded in their tight knit groups. It all sucks and I understand it isn't black or white.

Sorry HG, I have to raise the BS flag here. If jokes (sometimes highly offensive ones) about Canadian and Southern stereotypes is accepted here - and even encouraged - then certainly Mormon stereotypes aren't off limits.

I think in terms of making fun of religions, the only religion that appears to be fair game is general christianity (and maybe catholicism)... or maybe just general religiousness itself. You aren't going to see a bunch of jokes about Islam or Judaism, so I get why Mormonism would be something that shouldn't be joked about. |

1. Nobody makes fun Muslims for fear of being bombed and 2. nobody makes fun of the Jews because being a Jew is punishment enough.

Jews are cooler versions of Christians. Funny how Christians think of themselves as "perfected jews."
I really have nothing to add here, actually.

I never thought I would see FD use such a broad statement, even with the justification he used after it.
Religious persicution is fucking rampant these days and it pisses me off. It has become OK to be atheist quite recently (in historical terms) and now it seems like every second athiest has a 'holier than thou' additude towards religious people. Someone believes in God, big deal. They aren't total morons for doing so.
Athiests used to (and sometimes still do) compain that religious people try to convert them. All athiests wanted was to be left to their own beliefs. Now that athiests are the majority in certain circles, some feel it's fine to ridicule others for their beliefs. If they want to believe in God and a religion, so be it. As long as they just practice it on their own and don't take it to extremes (most religious people don't) then let them be.
Disclaimer: I'm athiest but grew up next to a pastor. He was nothing but an awesome guy and never tried to convert me or change my beliefs at all. It gave me a lot of respect for the way tollerant religious people can be, and I do my best to be a tollerant atheist.

Edit: to clarify, I think jokes about religion are fine (as well as jokes about atheism) as long as they are all in good fun. Sometimes people just talk down to religion in general and it just seems condecending. I'm not saying anyone here did that, I just went on a rant.

I really struggled with this at first... when I first rejected my religious upbringing, I wanted to "enlighten" everyone. One of my sisters made the point to me that if her faith brings her happiness, who am I to try to take that away. So as long as my beliefs aren't being challenged, I try to keep them to myself.
Harsh though - last year I was talking to my mom about this stuff, who I respect as an incredibly intelligent woman, and she said to me, "I thought I raised you as a good Christian"... my response, "was raising me as a good person not enough"...
We dont talk about religion anymore.

Hah! I still remember the first and only time my mom and I had the "Pea is no longer religious" chat. We were at Olive Garden. It pretty much ruined dinner.
She still tries to get me to go to Christmas service and whatnot (to which I oblige about one out of every three years), but religion is definitely a topic that no longer gets brought up between us. Damn you LSD! Look what you did to my relationship with my mamma!
