 Celiac at Sasquatch?
« Thread Started on Feb 27, 2012, 5:11pm »

Hi everyone,

I've tried Googling this but couldn't find any information. I also contacted Sasquatch information twice, but didn't get an answer.

I'm celiac and have some pretty serious dietary restrictions. Is anyone also celiac and has attended Sasquatch before?

I'm assuming most of their food is hot dogs, burgers, fries, sandwiches, etc - none of which I can have. I'm okay with bringing my own food, but I'm just wondering if they have any gluten-free options.

As for drinks, I'm guessing they don't have any GF beer, so I'm stuck with wine... or sneaking in my own whiskey?

Thanks!

I'm basically celiac (wheat allergy) and unfortunately there's pretty much no options for us at Sasquatch. I did buy food and drinks a couple times each time I've been - a teriyaki rice bowl once each year (but there is wheat in the teriyaki sauce so it depends how sensitive you are), fries (but I'm sure they're done in the same fryer as the chicken strips) and I bought the margarita boot a couple times, which was probably the only non-contaminated item.

Honestly, if you're really sensitive don't even think about buying any food there. Save yourself the worry and discomfort and just bring your own. Last thing you want is to be doubled up with cramps or visiting the honey buckets all weekend because you ate a shitty $9 box of fries. It was worth it for the weed brownie I bought in the campground last year but never for any of the "food" the gorge provides.

My girlfriend is celiac, suzanne. Nothing is safe. The fries are fried in the same oil as chicken strips, the burgers are grilled beside the buns, and the teriyaki sauce is just obviously not safe. As far as drinks, though, there are liquor options and she drank some of those, along with sneaking in our own booze (btw, which whiskey do you drink? isn't it malt?)

Anyway, the Gorge doesn't have vending options for you so bring your own food. But if you stay at Wildhorse, she had no trouble eating their food, and she is incredibly sensitive. I put a drop of hot sauce in a pot of chili that I hadn't checked and contained wheat maltodextrin, and she threw up after half a bowl. Celiacs is intense, I feel for ya'll.

Ya, I do not envy your position. Bringing your own food is really the only way. Then again, that means you won't be eating Gorge food, and this is a fucking godsend. Gorge food is fucking gross.

Thanks so much guys. I've been creeping these boards a lot lately and have become afraid of the wrath of some of the hardcore posters!

I Dr. Garbanzoured that would be the case :( Thanks for the heads up. I'll be bringing all of my own food. I get a really serious reaction, so I won't even consider buying anything there. Sigh. FML.

As for whiskey being GF, it depends who you ask. The US Food & Drug Admin says it's below 20ppm so it's okay (because of the distillation process), and other people say it's not GF at all. I never have a reaction though, and usually my gluten reaction is pretty serious, so I drink it anyway. I can't stand coolers or highballs, but love beer to death... I'll be damned if celiac takes away my whiskey!

They don't sell Strongbow there, do they? That would be a total godsend.

Am I a hardcore poster? :)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I've seen Strongbow SOMEWHERE in the venue before, but don't quote me on that. As a new fan of the stuff, I'd be quite happy to see it in there as well.

I feel like people here are not really going to make fun of you for a food allergy. If you are Canadian, however, all bets are off.

I definitely saw people with Strongbow last year, but there is the slight chance that they sumggled it in. I don't think I ever saw it for sale, but I only bought 2 beers the entire weekend because I always had an ample supply of smuggled booze.

Ba-dum-ching! She is Audrey, and she is Celiac. We are legion.

It's funny because in my experience that's how Celiac people talk about themselves, rather than saying "I have Celiacs."

It is kinda strange but I find it's one of the few diseases where people who have it identify through it in the same way a person would say "I'm Jewish" or "I'm gay" or "I'm Canadian". Like it becomes a lifestyle, living gluten-free. At least that's what I've experienced through my exposure to the Celiac community.

Growing up, my grandmother had it and then a few years ago I was a nanny for a family where one of their sons had just been diagnosed, so I particapted quite a bit with them in support groups and online communities. It seemed like everyone involved devoted huge portions of their lives to research, medical appointments, trading tips and recipes, etc. Personally, maybe 'cause it's not so severe for me (yet), I'm not at that point but I certainly understand how it can become a huge focus point of daily living for some. Then again, I think it's also how some people relate to their respective diseases; I've never been one to focus on some of my chronic illnesses but my god-mom or grandma are the types that when you ask how they are, they start listing off which ailment's been doing well or what's acting up etc.

What type of whiskey do you like best? Normally, I have zero reaction but then the other night I had a severe reaction to the whiskey sours I ordered at a restaurant (didn't have anything else to eat or drink). I didn't think to check what brand they used but I'm thinking I'm going to have to find out which brands have a better refining process and start testing them out before this year's fest.

I never saw Strongbow for sale anywhere, just brought my own. It can be hard to find cider in the states but they always have a much better selection of GF beer. I'd just stick to bringing your own booze and sneaking it, you'll save a lot of money and not have to worry.
