DANCING GIRL ARRESTED AT SHARON JONES (MON)
« Thread Started on May 31, 2011, 10:31pm »

During Sharon and The Dap Kings on Monday evening a friend from the group I came out to Sasquatch with was dancing in the walkway when security started ushering everyone onto the grass. After dancing her way up onto the grass she was rushed by security, thrown into a tight gripping headlock and then restrained by multiple guards. She is about 5'2", hardly 100lbs, and WAS ONLY DANCING!! Apparently she was "too mouthy" when she protested the excessive force used on her so she was hauled out of the grounds and then arrested. The charges? DISORDERLY CONDUCT and OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE. That's it.
Here is a video we came across on YouTube showing what happened after she had already been thrown to the ground. We are asking if anyone else witnessed this and can provide additional video or photos that document what occurred.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9omr3BCEFeE

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. WE NEED TO MAKE A VOICE ABOUT THIS IN ORDER TO KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING TO SOMEONE ELSE. Again, she WAS NOT doing anything other than DANCING. Period.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

She was probably really really drunk. Nothing to see here, move along.

NOPE.

No public intoxication charge, no under the influence charge.
Watch the video.
This is serious. Please don't turn this into a nonsense thread.
We're not interested in having a comment war. We're only interested in keeping this from happening to other responsible paying festival attendees. This time it was our friend. We're trying to keep it from happening to you or your friends.

Thank you all for showing interest and paying attention.

It's a fucking music festival. I dance. I'm drunk. I'm high. So is everyone else. Something has to be missing from the story or the security dudes are fucking rahtards. Sorry this happened to ya. Buzzkill times a million.

Well until we get the whole story, I don't know what we can say about it.

Thank you.
That is exactly why we are searching out additional video and photos from the multiple people who DID get at least part of it recorded. Until then, just like every other situation, it's just one person's word against another.

I hate to ask this, but how old is she? If she was underage and drinking, that's enough reason for them to throw her out. I agree the forcefulness was excessive, and this is pretty shitty, but I can't imagine the blue shirts would have bothered her much if she was of age.

That video shows a girl who is clearly very intoxicated and resisting security. Not to mention the bev. Enforcement guys were all chill as long as you were. They would walk up and confiscate the booze and walk away. I would almost guarantee she snuck in booze then when they tried to take it she flipped, or something similar on those lines.

:-) Yes, she is above legal drinking age. Our whole group was comprised of responsible adults all in our 30's with careers, homes, a dog or two, etc.

I don't blame people for being skeptical. I might be too if this wasn't part of my direct personal experience with my own group of friends.

This really happened. Not every security guard at the festival behaved inappropriately with the people they interacted with. However, in this specific circumstance boundaries were clearly crossed. This isn't about standing up to "the man" or rebelling against authority. This is about standing up to ABUSE.

Again, watch the video.

I'm kind of with other people when it comes needing the whole story to assess but the headlock is definitely unnecessary.

The video is pretty inconclusive. It's impossible to tell if she was struggling and that's why they were restraining her.

I feel bad for the security guards, I wouldn't want that job in a hundred years, and I think 99% of the time they're pretty cool about everything. The beverage guys never look the other way, which sucks, but rules is rules.

But if indeed the beverage people put your friend in a headlock for dancing, you have a good reason to be outraged. Hopefully some more evidence surfaces, but I have none.

Thank you.

This post wasn't written to bash security or the festival. The sole porpoise of this comment thread is an attempt to help gather as much additional video/photo documentation as possible regarding this very specific circumstance. The issue is the excessive force that was used here. THAT is the issue. We realize that the idea of this occurring unjustly is a disturbing thought to consider. It is near unbelievable to all of us that witnessed it, but that's what makes it such a big deal. Just because the vast majority of us did not have an experience like this when/if we encountered security does not mean every single person was as fortunate.

It is obviously impossible to 'prove' to anyone who wasn't there what happened in the moment that lead up to our friend being thrown into a choke hold, and so we're not even going to try to plead her case on this forum. If you didn't see it, you didn't see it so it's not part of your reality. Be grateful for that. We were there. We know exactly what happened. We're just hoping to locate the additional footage we saw other people taking of the situation.

If you were on the top part of the hill during Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and recorded part of the set, please review them and see if any of this may have been included in your video. Again, it began with security ushering dancing people off the middle walkway parallel to the stage.

I was totally sitting like 10 feet to the right of this! My friend and I were shocked because we saw the whole thing go down and your friend was 100% doing nothing at that moment that seemed to justify the extreme amount of force used upon her. We saw this petite happy girl dancing in her own little zone (and she definitely didn't appear overly intoxicated. She wasn't stumbling or being obnoxious to anyone around her, or anything), some words exchanged between her and a female security guard, the guard taking a step up the hill toward her, the girl taking a step away, and then BOOM, tackle. Then a male security guard came up to help keep her down, forcing her to her knees with her hands behind her back, and a third person came up with handcuffs.

My friend and I wondered if she had done something earlier in the festival and security had been looking for her specifically; nothing else made sense. I didn't take photos or video (my iPhone had died) but we were really upset by the whole thing just because it seemed so unnecessary--so I can't imagine how much that must have sucked for her, or her group of friends! Is she OK? We wondered if she had been injured at all because she was being held in what looked like a pretty painful position, from our vantage point on the lawn.

If all she was doing was mouthing off, that's really ridiculous. If someone tackled me for that alone, I'd surely also resist. I'm not going to calmly let a stranger handcuff me for no real reason. So if that's really the whole story, then...damn, I wish you and your friend the best of luck with this. Definitely messed up.

This is unbelievable!!

I'm been looking for footage of that male security official and the older woman who was wearing a visor. Those two security officials where horrible people.

Similar story of a situation not being dealt with professionally by the same two individuals happened to us. We had just arrived on the festival ground for our third day. My friend purchased his girlfriend a beer and we walked towards where we would setup base for the day. I look back and can see security (The same two individuals as in the video) talking to my friends then out of nowhere forcibly grabbing them and dragging them to the "VIP area".

Turns out my friend hadn't yet gotten her alcohol wristband for the day and the security official walked up to them and just took her beer, she showed them I.D. and once they saw she was Canadian she said "I'm tired of you Canadian coming here and thinking you can get away with murder!" then put the I.D. in her pocket (MY FRIEND IS 24 YEARS OLD!). My friend went to take her I.D. back from the ladies pocket and when she did it all went bad, the lady screamed it was assault and forcibly grabbed my friend and put her into a headlock. Another from our group started yelling and telling them to let her go which in return they also grabbed my other friend.

We where all sober, and once they had the girls behind the fence I tried to sensibly talk to the male security official. His reply to me was "Where you from, Canada, this is america I'm not talking to you" and shut the door in my face.

My friends where evicted and ruined our experience.

This is something that cannot be let go! I had almost forgot about the situation then watched this video and see that its THE SAME TWO PEOPLE! Does the gorge do any form of screening when they hire these lunatics who discriminate against groups!?

Does anyone have any information on the two officials as I would seriously like to pursue some sort of criminal action or at the very least ensure they are no longer working there and causing this!

I too was at the show with the person in question, and no such question exists!!!

From spending half the weekend with this mild mannered person to seeing her in headlock being detained is completely insane! There is nothing she could have possibly done that deserved this treatment!

I watched (nearly) everything. After doing a little dancing in the grass next to our group she made her way down to the paved path where she continued to dance in Legitimate Sharon Jones fashion. My problem is I glanced away, for what was literally less than a minute. When I looked back up I had noticed all hell had broke loose at the base of the grass near the path.

I can't believe an altercation so extreme occurred in that moment to constitute such injustice! Like I said, I too spent the part of the weekend with her, and a moment of rage deserving of this simply did not and could not have happened.

The whole thing was ridiculous. Dancing is not a crime!!!
