My point was that it should be blatantly obvious when you are crossing a line. There are not people sitting around waiting to "call sexism" on you.
HG and Spirulina summed up my feelings quite well, so I will just say that if you are the kind of person who things racist and sexist jokes are funny, you think racism and sexism are funny, and I just do not understand that.
And Geno, this is not about being easily offended. I am so not easily offended. This is about being marginalized and really, for me, not letting people get away with the lazy rationalization that "whatever I say is just going to offend these people." You don't need to walk on eggshells, you just need to use some common sense and respect.

Just a quick note that might make things easier, if you need to clarify that something is not sexist or racist after you say it, just don't say it.
It's really just being polite and being aware of other people's feelings.

This is just some side info. At every point in time the world was at it's most educated, technologically and socially advanced state when compared to it's past. At one point while living in it's most advanced state white people felt okay with owning black slaves. They felt okay in referring to them in demeaning ways and joking about them as 2nd rate human beings. Popular language was abundant with these slurs to the point that they extended to descriptions beyond the actual person and would describe undesirable traits and ways of doing things. A minority of the population always found this to be unfair and immoral, but the majority just saw them as being "too sensitive". Despite living in the most advanced civilized neck of the woods it took hundreds of years to even begin touching the tip of the iceberg of this travesty that extends beyond the vile action and into the language that we use to perpetuate a people's oppression.
Sometimes I wish people would just take a second and listen to, not just one, not just a few, but a whole entire group's concern and disapproval to the overwhelming and accepted use we have in condescending terms and language in our current vocabulary at their expense. What makes you so special that you can disregard their feelings as "over sensitivity"? Back in the day the majority of people weren't terrible racists because they wanted to be or worked hard on presenting themselves as so, it just was the way things were and most people blindly accepted it. Since the hate and oppression was so openly encouraged it, very unfortunately, seemed okay. Anyone who opposed was clearly too sensitive and not worried about the bigger issues of the day (the economy, trading, land...).
We ain't all that more special than any other group of people who have ever lived in the present and I guarantee you our future people will look back on this time with boggled minds on how we allowed things to be the way they were. Let's just hope it doesn't take another couple of hundred years for that view point to manifest as a collective majority.

I was just saying, when someone says something like that on the other websites I go to, they just get called an idiot and everyone else moves on.
There are idiots on the internet, there's no reason to get offended by what some random idiot on the internet says. Just ignore the idiot, and move on. Otherwise, we get into these kind of arguments that won't go anywhere.

I got to agree with this. There's many things I've found to be offensive even if only marginally that have been said by numerous board members, but I think the important thing to keep in mind is that it's the FUCKING internet. There is no law for enforcing sensibility, and there is no charter demanding courtesy.
