 Recovery
« Thread Started on Feb 22, 2011, 10:35pm »

Hey guys,
was wondering if anyone going was in recovery? I think it would be smart to get some contacts or what not for when we get to the festival or the camp sites.
Thanks,
Vannie

This is actually a good idea, and I applaud you for doing it. Its definitely going to be an interesting atmosphere to stay sober in... (not that i'll be sober)

Very, very tough place to stay sober. I really do sincerely wish you the best of luck.

People stay sober at burning man. Then again, they have AA and every other kind of A meetings all day every day.

I'm not too worried about not staying sober, just think it would be a good idea to have some sober contacts out there.

This idea is almost as bad as bringing your 2-year-old to Sasquatch, the major difference being you're only endangering yourself. You will be completely engulfed by temptation. In the campsite, people will be taking drugs (alcohol, weed, and otherwise) constantly around you. At the festival, they may hide it better, but even more people will be on drugs. Even Snorlax will be high. It would take some serious will power to stay sober. It sounds like you're pretty confident about it, which is good, but if you do decide to go you should definitely follow through with finding a support group. A friend of a friend who is a recovering alcoholic (the rest of us haven't yet admitted we have a problem) came with us to Sasquatch a couple years ago and it was hell for him. While we weren't about to rub it in his face we did imbibe around him. The entire weekend he just didn't seem to enjoy himself. He would go off with those of us who don't drink so much, but even still you could tell he was in a bad place. Literally and Dr. Garbanzouratively. Maybe he wasn't as far along the steps as you, but I would not want to be that guy and that's what I'm trying to say. Good luck to you if you do decide to dare it!

I appreciate the concern. I'll be there and I'll be sober, if anybody wants a sober contact out there pm me.

OP: I see what you're after here, and I see what you're not after. I'll shake things up a bit by suggesting that you, personally, will not necessarily have any trouble whatsoever with staying sober at Sasquatch. I hope you find some sober contacts through this board. Good luck.

Unless the people you attend the fest with are consistantly partaking in inebriating substances then I really don't think you will have a difficult time. There are always plenty of campsites with people who seem to more or less be enjoying a more sober experience, and the only time during the weekend where drug usage is at an astronomical high (for lack of a better word) is during the later dance tent acts and late stages. Both of which are more than easily avoidable if need be. I for one prefer spending the morning and most of the afternoon sober - let's me enjoy the sunshine and daytime activities much more.

I don't find it that hard to stay sober at festivals when it costs $9 for 1 beer.

The scenery, music, and people are generally awesome. Nobody is going to force you to drink. I do suggest staying away from the wild parties in the campground at night though.

I guess as far as drinking goes, I've never once been intoxicated at the festival.
