Well, I think there is a difference between what we're talking about. Standing there and not playing anything isn't right, especially when they were billed so high and on a reunion tour. Couple that with his attitude and I think I would have been severely disappointed too. There were probably a LOT of people seeing them for their first time and they should have been worth the wait and lived up to the hype. Making people stand around and wait just makes it seem like nothing has changed. Such an obvious cash grab in that case.

What I was talking about is more of the fact that Malkmus' voice isn't perfect, they have messy arrangements at times but it's not a reflection on their skill or talent. They're just not going to be a band like, say, The Black Keys where everything sounds tight and perfect.

Again, I have no memories of a "bitchfit." I will agree on the day drunk. It was Malkmus' birthday, and apparently "LCD Soundsystem feed [them] a lot of great champagne backstage." And then of course there was the technical difficulties which involved having to restart Rattled by the Rush about three times, with long pauses.

These unfortunate circumstances actually made the entire set from then on great for me. I saw them 3 other times on that tour, and all of them they were kinda stiff, but the rest of the show they just had this "fuck it, let's have fun" attitude that I loved. They've always kinda improvised during their songs, but this especially happened at the Sasquatch set. Malkmus and even the others were getting really adventurous with the songs, trying new things (I guess if you don't have a deep familiarity with Pavement, you might not notice). There was so much energy through the whole show, and it sounded nothing like the other 3 shows that I saw.

Also, the rest of the bands weekend sounded almost so tight and perfect to me at times that it could almost sound sterile. Pavement was a little bit refreshing after all this.

Alright everyone, shit away!

Thanks. I can get behind switching things up and playing loose/free. I didn't hear the stuff about it being Malk's birthday or LCD, either. That changes things in a way, as a fan, but I can still see how people would be upset and disappointed. I guess it's a set that will life in infamy and I'm sorry that I wasn't there to witness it! LumPea, where else did you see them on that tour? I'm glad there's another Pavement fan around here...for so long everytime I would even mention Pavement people would stare at me blankly or only vaguely have anything to say about them!

Definitely the same here (obviously).

Saw them in Chicago at Pitchfork, the first New York date, and in Atlanta (I live in South Carolina). The others were good. But they seemed stiff and trying too hard to impress, which is what made me love the Sasquatch set.

By my reckoning, the three most hated Sasquatch sets ever are:

1. The Mars Volta
2. Pavement
3. Animal Collective

2 and 3 are very polarizing, with vehement haters and staunch defenders in equal measure.

#1 not so much. I've never talked to a single person who could even tolerate that shit, and if I had I would have certainly kicked them in the nuts.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that last point. While it has been discussed to great length, FUCK OMAR.

I recall enjoying the debauchery that was The Mars Volta. Please don't kick me. But if you have to, can you at least make it the shin?

You aren't alone Chud. It was more of a retaliation to Endfest anyways and they took it out on all of us. Dick move but still entertaining to watch

The group of folks I was with left. I stayed and gazed in awe at what was taking place.

I was super drunk during that set and had no idea what was going on but was having so much fun in the pit just ragin', talking to mullet guy and trying to sing along to the two songs I did know. I ended up enjoying it but I know I'm in the minority.

Burritoman said his girlfriend almost got taken out by that symbol. It is one thing to get rowdy at a show, it is another thing entirely to get physically violent with your crowd and endanger them.
