Buying camping tickets online vs. at the gate

In the past I have bought camping tickets at the gate. This year I am thinking about buying them online. I know that when you buy at the gate, you pay for the whole weekend and get a partial refund depending on when you leave. Is that the case when you buy online or am I in for the full amount regardless of when I leave. I plan on arriving Friday night and leaving Monday morning. What is my best (cheapest) plan of attack. Also, is there any risk of camping selling out? I can't remember that ever happening.

When have you ever gotten a partial refund???

A few years ago they used to give partial refunds if you left a day or two early. The system was overly complicated and confused the hell out of too many people. They no longer bother with refunds and just charge a flat rate.

They always say, "no one will be turned away," so technically your cheapest plan of attach is to pay when you get there. I believe you save about $10 on Ticketbastard fees by doing so. The potential downside is that you may be put into overflow camping, which is an even further walk from the venue. This happened last year after they sold out of camping tickets online about a week before the festival. Personally, I'm always mildly concerned that it IS in fact possible for them to sell out and so it's worth the $10 (split 4 ways) to buy in advance. You'll have to make your own decision.

You can order online and print the camping pass for $2.50, or pick up at a ticketmaster outlet for $3. Tiny price for piece of mind.

Last year, they increased the size of premium camping right before the festival, so I believe when regular became overcrowded, they were making late arrivals without a pass purchase a premium pass for the higher rate.

I don't recall anyone on the board confirming this though. I either overheard it at the festival last year, or dreamed it up last night. Either way, I would hate to get stuck in terrace camping because everything else is "full."

That is after their service charge, but the sentiment is the same. Just buy online and save yourself the potential of a rude surprise when you get there. Or maybe that's just what they want you to think!

If you get there on Friday or early Saturday when everyone else does they are not going to segregate camping by anything other the VIP/regular. And if they try to make you go to the back just turn left (to the closer camping) instead. The campgroup workers are mostly minimum-wage locals who don't give a s**t where you end up. They just want to pack everybody in.
