newb looking for sasquatch lgbt camping info...
« Thread Started on Mar 18, 2012, 12:47am »

hello all.. i'm going to be coming to sasquatch 2012 after some good reviews from friends. just wondering about how LGBT friendly it is. going to be travelling with a large group of lesbians and a few of their straight friends, so looking for something that everyone is able to enoy.

any suggestions for first timers in general, and first timers from the LGBT community? thanks!

Tegan and Sara played one year, and then were invited back to play again. If that doesn't say gay friendly I don't know what does.

Lolz.

I've been to Sasquatch with a lesbian couple and there was no problem. I don't think there will be any issues. It's not San Francisco, but it's also not Iran.

Last year was my first Sasquatch. I happened to go solo. Short version: you'll be fine.

Long version: I didn't notice that many other gays in the village as it were, but I also didn't have any problems. It's a music festival, and people are there for two reasons: music, and one hell of a party. Nobody is going to care much whether you're straight or otherwise. I had a great time with absolutely no issues and met tons of new people.

Our group befriended a lesbian couple over the web in 2010, and we camped together in 2011. The fact that they were gay had no bearing on theirs or our enjoyment of the festival, and I don't imagine that you would have any different experience.

I recognize that this thread is just daring someone to make a sideways comment so I am measuring my words as carefully as possible, but still: how necessary is it to ask this question? Cuz I'm sorry, but in the interest of equality I have to give you as much shit about starting an unnecessary thread as I would anyone else.

It's a music festival. In the NW United States. There will be tens of thousands of people there, and just based on probability I would estimate that nearly a full 25% of those will fall under the category of L, G, B or T. (Mostly B -- seriously, lots of Portlanders.)

To answer your question: It is as LGBT friendly as it is Anything Else friendly, with the possible exception of being not very Mormon friendly -- so in that regard I'd say you're ahead of the game. (I say this as a former Mormon and also as a person who was camped next to a group of Mormons in 2010 who spent the entire weekend wearing the facial expression of a person who is obligated to pick mushrooms off their pepperoni pizza).

So okay, I get it, but I promise you're not the first group of lesbians to come to Sasquatch and if Sasquatch had a history of lynchings you'd probably have read about it in the paper.

This year there's even a special stage named The Maine Stage that is specifically dedicated for the LGBT crowd. Have tons of fun!

I think it's a semi-legit question.

Coachella, for one, has a HUGE LGBT community and meet-ups, parties, etc. etc. I wouldn't say the general population of this board is hip to that scene if it is going on - but I don't think it is.

Sasquatch is certainly friendly to LGBT people but it definitely isn't Lilith Fair.

I have a "L" parent and my opinion is this:

Unless they decide to move the festival to north Idaho and Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ted Nugent are headlining then I think you are perfectly fine. Like HG said, there are a lot of people from Portland and most of the rest are from Seattle and Canada. These places have highly intelligent, liberal, and accepting inhabitants that welcome all people to this awesome festival. No need to worry about this at all.

There's a clear reason why all my friends are gay.
