Btw folks, in regard to canopies, from experience in the wind on the lowere gorge at Lake Bonneville....just roping them down well is not enough, the wind will pull the stakes right out or tear the tarps, etc...the key is to make bungie cord shock absorbers to take the energy of the sudden gusts...easy to do

Would you mind elaborating on this? There were a lot of canopy deaths last year due to gusty wind.

Yeah, you use 10" to 14" nails/spikes and tie a bungie cord to the top....then run the guy line through the hooks and tighten....when the wind blows the spring of the cord takes the hard pull....or you could get marine line snubbers but I think they are for much greater masses.

Yeah, that's a good approach for gusty wind. if it's a steady wind you're still in trouble. My canopy survived 50mph winds last summer (tornado touched down 1/2 mile away) with only a cracked foot, but we managed to get the nylon off the frame pretty quickly when the wind picked up.

I am contemplating bringing a backpack this year. I have never been fond of bringing any extra baggage to a show, even a sweatshirt, but it sounds pretty common here. I really find it annoying when people in the crowd don't pay attention and swing the things into me. Will I be that guy? Anyway maybe some suggestions or comments. Somebody mentioned you need to have a northface to get extra drinks in.

I hated having a bag last year. I felt like I was a hunchback and kept smacking people with my hump. I don't really see a way around it though. I even tried to ditch mine last year but it ended up rotting in Lost and Found Hell. I don't know how you would survive without a backpack, but I really hate having to bring it in. None of this is really useful information, I just hate backpacks.

What is that, like a murse? That would be worse to have a messenger type bag with a single strap.
Edit: Oh yeah, Seinfeld. I totally spaced that part out, but I still had the right idea.

1. Tie your sweatshirt around your waist and say it's a retro look. 2. Bolt some metal lockers to the ground and sell them for >$50 a pop like that dude at Coachella. 3. European Carry All. 4. Hunchback. 5. Fanny pack and a jacket that rolls to the size of a generously packed joint. 6. Park a Segway outside of the venue and take it back and forth to the campsite. 7. Do enough substances that the cold and other things won't matter. 8. Cargo Pants; Pea can tell you the best places to get them.

I hate people with backpacks in and around the pit. With a passion.

I have one of these.
![[image] [image]](http://images.mec.ca/media/Images/Products/Packs/4004126t_v1_m56577569831118009.jpg)
Excepting Saturday when I was packing 1000 glowsticks in, I was able to fit everything I needed into it (I clipped the glowing hat to it with a velcro strap during the day). I rock this man-purse on a regular basis, not just Sasquatch, and honest to god it's the best thing ever. And it worked fine for sneaking booze in too.
For you canucks, yes, it's from MEC. Which also means it's virtually indestructible. Best $20ish I've ever spent on a bag.

I use the smaller version of the Camelbak; it's lightweight, doesn't take up very much space, and has a waist strap to keep it from swinging.

Sucks for you. People who care about having enough water, snacks and warm clothing for the day want to have a good time too.

Plus, backpack straps make for excellent thumb holders while doing a most spectacular white man dance.

I understand where sara is coming from. It sucks having people plow through the crowd with their pack on. I would never attend a full day festival without a pack though. If I get up close I take my pack off and hold it at my side or between my legs while I watch the show.
